THE HIDDEN DOVETAIL
the stonemason carves a chamfer
the flower arranger removes the yellow
because white and blue say it all
the wordsmith cuts and pastes, knowing that
sound and rhythm can contribute to meaning
the painter’s meticulous sketches, with
notes about tone and wind, inform each brush stroke
the cook experiments with fingertip and tongue
the film editor hones in on a twenty-fifth of a second
the dressmaker’s infinitesimal stitchery
the perfect hidden dovetail of the table-maker
the careful intuition of the choreographer
so much unheard, unseen, un-noted
layers of all we are
